Review IV: The Photography

No worries, this is the last post of me reviewing my own wedding 😉

This post is long over due and yet so hard to write. The photography at our wedding is quite the delicate theme and I wanted to have a big “cool down” period before writing this post.

This is the story:

Finding a good photographer that we liked was hard for us. My husband is a photographer and has his own style of photography, since he could not take the pics himself we needed to find someone else.

We hired S to take our pictures. We had seen her pictures and really liked them. Then we were told the pictures  were at a discounted price (BONUS!) because of a promotion she had going on at the time we booked her.

Then we did an event together, she raffled a photo session and we won it. I asked her if we could use it for our engagement shoot and she said “of course!”

The day of the engagement shoot came and things started to go downhill. I am very picky when it comes to customer service and there were several points that ruffled my feathers:

  • We arrived a bit earlier and she told us to wait because she wanted to have a smoke which she then proceeded to smoke right there next to us (I’m sorry but YUCK!)
  • She didn’t want to do certain pose because it was unconventional, she then accepted and took the picture
  • We told her we don’t like pictures of kissing and kissing. She kept telling us to kiss each other
  • Instead of slowly making our way to the car while she took pictures she said “we have 15 minutes left but we have enough pictures, let’s make it to the car”
  • When I reminded her that the shoot was part of the raffle she let out a big “Oh! F—!”

We took all these things as a “well, she is the best friend of someone we know, maybe she just feels comfortable” We then saw the pictures… so gross repulsive bad! But we explained to ourselves: “the horrible lighting could be because she’s not used to work outdoors with a very bright Summer Sun plus she must have lost her flash” After all, we HAD seen her pictures before!

Nope, it was all a prelude to what our wedding pictures and service was going to be. I will not write more details of her lack of good customer service manners or the disgusting pictures she took. Which is weird because she took pictures of another wedding a month later and they were beautiful. Was it all because she was getting less money from us? I don’t know. Needles to say: we will never use her services nor will I say who is S.

But every story, specially stories that involve a Fairy, has to have a happy ending, right? OF COURSE!

A friend of ours used to work on photography a long time ago, he wanted to take pics of the wedding so he used my husband’s camera and we got awesome shots like this one of my mom during crazy hour

Crazy Mom during Crazy Hour

Also, my dear husband took a couple of pictures like a detail from when he was getting ready:

And a picture that proves that we got married!

And then, as luck has it, I met Chantal Benoit on Twitter and she asked me to pose for her. As a thank you, she gave us this picture:

We also bought from her a beautiful black and white head shot of us. She was amazing with everything! Great customer service, great presence, beautiful product. She’s awesome to no end and a pleasure to work with!

See? Happy ending! 😀

Review III: Things that made me look beautiful

That would be hair, make-up, and dress. Jewelry also counts but there is a story with each piece I wore so that will have its own post 😉

I got ready at my dad’s, both hair dresser and make up artist went to my dad’s without extra charge.

Hair: Norah opened a little hole on the Ozone Layer right on top of my dad’s house but it was well worth it! Not even one single hair moved and it was *exactly* what I wanted. Not only that, but Norah was awesome! We had had a trial run where we decided how my hair was going to look, she made it up and we modified things until it was how I wanted it, she then took pictures for later. If you would like to contact her, her email is

Look at my hair! Look at my hair!

Make-up: Sarah poor Sarah… she was set up in the middle of the disaster zone my family, so she patiently heard every single weird, funny, and inappropriate comment my family uttered. You see? They have no filters. And that’s hereditary, so you can’t blame me for not having them either 😉 Sarah was over the world amazing. On our trial run she had written down a bunch of notes about my skin, my taste, and the need for everything to be as water proof as possible. And boy did she ever delivered! I cried, I laughed, and I sweated and the make-up and fake eyelashes lasted until the very end! She has the patience of a Saint, specially when it was my mom’s turn for make up and she kept asking for more MOAR! You can see more of Sarah’s work by going to her website

Look at my make-up! Look at my make-up!

Dress: *uses a British reporter’s accent* “The bride wore a dress by Two Birds Bridesmaid and she decided to have it cut at the knees after the wedding so she can use it for other events”

Really, I tried actual wedding dresses but… they were just not ME. I love the way the look in all those models, and they didn’t look half bad on me but I felt just like that: a model. A dress to be worn once (or twice if you go as a zombie bride on Halloween) and that it’s SO expensive I would be afraid of spilling anything on it. Let alone the fact that it was “stuffy”. Gorgeous dresses but didn’t give me too much wiggle room. I wanted to stuff my face with food but would not be able to do it if the dress had whale bones (or whatever the corset sticks thingies are called) and I wanted to dance and move around but all the dresses were so heavy! Don’t get me wrong: I do love wedding dresses, just not for me to wear for a party 😉 So that’s how the lovely ladies from With Love Bridal Boutique hooked me up with the dress that made me smile! (my family pointed out that I hadn’t smiled with any of the other dresses I had tried on) And I was able to eat to my heart’s content, have an awesome first dance with my brand new husband, and dance with my best friend’s brother (who happened to be her wedding gift to me)

Review II: The cake of my dreams

About two years ago was the first time I saw a picture from The Cake Whisperer, an amazing baker that has her home base so very close to my own house! Since I saw her cakes I felt in love and, since then, I’ve been dreaming of getting myself a cake in the shape of a dragon.

However, I needed a good excuse and when Mr. Fairy With T proposed I got my answer: perfect day for dragon cake! Thus, we contacted Cathy and the planning started. We decided to go with a dragon wrapped around a camera. The camera would be representing Mr. Groom. The dragon would be wearing a veil since I wasn’t wearing one.

We also got a couple of bowling pins on the cake in representation to our very first date. Then came the hard part: the flavour! She gave me an extensive list:

  • Cookies n Cream Cake
  • Red Velvet Bliss Cake
  • Lemon Raspberry Cake
  • Cherry Confetti Cake
  • Caramel Cappuccino Cake
  • Crunchy Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake
  • Vanilla Raspberry Cake
  • Caramel Apple Spice
  • Toasted Coconut Cream Cake
  • Banana Cinnamon French toast
  • Banana Chocolate Caramel
  • Chocolate Strawberry
  • Sweet vanilla
  • Classic Vanilla Chocolate
  • Vanilla Raspberry Mocha
  • Orange Dream

I didn’t even know so many flavours existed in real life! We tasted Orange Dream, Red Velvet, and Crunchy Chocolate Peanut Butter. I was honestly expecting the cake itself not to be anything special, come on! Someone with the mad skills of making art out of cake cannot be a good baker, right? WRONG! They were AMAZING! And it was SO hard to decide! We discarded the peanut butter one when we remembered that one of the guest has serious peanut allergies, so, for the sake of not killing anyone peanut was out! Red velvet was delicious but Cathy wisely pointed out that a red cake when you cut into an animal might be distasteful. So orange dream it was! BUT I was set on a chocolate cake. So Cathy always coming to the rescue suggested chocolate cake with orange filling (please note, the orange icing is made with real oranges, you could taste the freshness and see little bits of pulp: awesome!)

Isn’t it amazing?!

Details on the veil

Face details

Not the best lighting but you can see details on the camera

We also got cupcakes with bowling details!

Thank you Cathy for making this dream come true! I’ll make sure to find another excuse to keep getting cakes from you! Until then,

Happy ramblings!

Review I: the magical venue

Everybody does reviews about everything, right? Well, I shall review my own wedding since I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

So I’ll start with the venue From This Day Forward.

The owner of the venue is Izabela, she is a Fairy God Mother in disguise. I say in disguise because I could not see the wings anywhere!

Anyways, let’s start from the beginning: we wanted a “Champagne Wedding with a Beer Budget” type of wedding, the thing is, we could only afford a small coffee at the cheapest coffee chain. We had thought of doing it at my dad’s and doing the math we would have had a regular wine wedding with an imported beer budget type of wedding; plus the headache of dealings with ten thousand different vendors: flowers, caters, table rentals, etc. PLUS cleaning the house before and after the event. The cleaning part makes me shudder in horror… This is how we landed at Izabela’s. The place looked exquisite and full of a cold and magnificent elegance that intimidated me and made the chequebook tremble in fear. Then Izabela showed up and made it all better 🙂

First of all, she let me bring tequeños which no one else would. That alone made me fall head over heels for the venue since for me, a wedding without tequeños is not a wedding! Then, she allowed me to have a “Crazy Hour” which is the last hour of the party gone bananas with whistles, masks, feather boas, and all sort of crazy things.

Having fun during the Crazy Hour

Since the investment we needed to do with her wasn’t huge, we decided to invest on a custom cake instead of using the cupcakes that come included in the package.

Reaction from people before the wedding:

  • The place is already decorated?! Oh The tragedy!
  • The tablecloth won’t be the same as your colors? Oh The tragedy! (Apparently, tablecloth color is a determinant of how much fun you can have at a wedding)
  • You don’t know what the center pieces will be?! Oh The tragedy!
  • You haven’t tasted the food first?! Oh The tragedy!
  • You won’t have your bouquet before you arrive there?! Oh The tragedy!
  • You don’t know exactly what your bouquet looks like?! Oh The tragedy! (I had given Izabela pictures of bouquets I liked and told her I wanted only white roses and daises)
  • It is in a basement?! Oh The tragedy!
  • You don’t know what is going to be on the food table?! Oh The tragedy!

Obviously, many people were having heart attacks for my lack of micro management skills.

Reaction of the people during/after the wedding:

  • The place is perfect!
  • The food is delicious!
  • The place looked great!
  • It was so much fun!
  • Everything was beautiful!
  • The bouquet was perfect!
  • You must have spent hours organizing everything so it would come out in such a perfect way, every detail was looked after! (This one made me laugh quite a lot since this person didn’t know that I had nothing to do with anything and that all my planning was a 1-hour meeting with Izabela 3 weeks before the wedding)

The day before the wedding, my husband (heeh heeh I’m married!) dropped off several white plates where I had decided to write our reading, a little silver tower, chocolate truffles, and candy (green jelly beans and dark chocolates). My colors were brown and green and I thought very last moment that I could add the colors with the candy, I forgot to tell Izabela this little detail.

After a great ceremony where I couldn’t stop crying, my husband (I can’t stop saying it! husband husband husbandhusbandhusband) and I went for a photoshoot and came back 20 minutes later. When we arrived, this was the very first thing we saw:

I know, the cake is amazing, but look how she organized everything!

Then, inside the venue EVERY.SINGLE.THING had a touch of green and brown. I did not tell her to do this, she is just that attentive to details! She worked really hard the whole night and had a huge smile on her face that warmed up my heart every time I saw it. She was amazing and deserves a big round of applause:

Thank you Izabela for making my wedding planning a stress-free journey and my wedding day a day of care-free enjoyment and love. I had the pleasure of having a Champagne wedding, but not any Champagne: a “Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1990, Millenium 2000, Methuselah” (*) with a nice domestic beer budget 🙂

I wish you the best and may you make all the brides of this city as happy as you made me. Until then,

Happy ramblings!

(*) judged the most expensive champagne of the world in 2011 when a 6L bottle was auctioned for more than $17,000 (or something like that)

Yup I’m going bananas with all my mood swings these past few days:

YAY! My mom is here

My BFF won’t be able to make it to my wedding

I’m getting married!

Egocentric much?

Someone wanted to book an event with me and the dialog happened:

  • Are you available on Sunday?
  • Normally I would but I am getting married on Saturday and that’s my only Honey Moon day *beams of pure happiness*
  • How about at 1:00 pm?
  • *recovers from shock* We booked a couple’s massage at 1:00 pm, see? We are getting married on Saturday and Sunday is our only Honey Moon day *beams again*
  • At what time is your appointment over? … hummm… no, I guess that would be too late hummm…. what about at 10:00 am?
  • *tries really hard to maker her eyes stop bulging from her face* er… well, it’s my Honey Moon, I really wasn’t planning on working that day.
  • And Saturday early?
  • I am getting married! *beams of happiness*
  • At what time? We could do it really early! 😀
  • *starts looking for the candid camera* I will be getting ready for my wedding. Sorry, I am really getting married.
  • *sigh*
  • *sigh* Ok, I was going to take Friday off since I am getting married on Saturday but I could do it at 6:00 pm
  • *disappointed look* I guess that’ll do.

I’m obviously quite egocentric thinking that a complete stranger would care about my Wedding Day 😉

How many weeks you said?!

Every time I hear “Are you all set for the wedding?” I answer “yup” and give a little inward grin as to how easy this wedding planning is.

At least that was until last weekend when a quick count reveled that I am only 6 weeks away from getting married SIX.WEEKS.AWAY! So I did the sensible thing: I freaked out!

What do I have so far?

  • Groom and best man suit: chose the ones that will be rented, only needs to be picked up a couple of days before the big day
  • Flower girl dresses: They have the most beautiful dresses that match the brown of the maid of honor to perfection
  • Bridesmaids dresses: They arrived and they do not need to be altered
  • Maid of honor dress: in alterations
  • My dress: it arrived… and got sent out because there was an issue at one of the seams. It will still needs to be altered to make it a bit shorter

That’s it! I have no dress! I have NO idea about the timeline of the wedding, no clue as to what the flowers will be, haven’t decided on the menu, or whether we will have our own vows!

Then the voice of reason Mr. Groom said: relax, timeline, flowers, food, non alcoholic drinks, and all that is decided with Izabela (owner of From This Day Forward, and part of the deal we got there when we booked our ceremony/reception) so I relaxed… then I started thinking: what about the transportation? And what are the pictures I want taken? And the makeup trial? And the music? And the MARRIAGE LICENSE? AND THE DRESS?! AND… AND… And… And… and I’m freaking out…
